Cancer is the leading single cause of death in New Zealand.

But the good news is that since peaking in 1989 the rate of deaths per 100,000 is declining.

The number one reason? Research.

Research has led to better prevention, early detection programmes, improved treatments, and new medications. These innovations have changed the course of cancer outcomes worldwide.

But with our ageing and growing population, cancer is on the rise, and the burden is getting heavier.

Research is our best hope to ease the cancer burden once and for all.

Cancer Research Trust New Zealand is the only organisation in Aotearoa solely focused on research across the entire cancer spectrum. Since 2002, we have kickstarted hundreds of innovative cancer research projects in prevention, cure and care, and helped change the course of cancer in New Zealand.

Backing the brightest minds and boldest ideas

With our rigorous and transparent assessment process, you can trust us to only fund the brightest minds and the boldest ideas.

Designed to get new ideas off the ground, our grants help researchers define proof of concept, test feasibility, and help unlock bigger, longer-term sources of funding.

We also fund fellowships and scholarships to equip the brightest minds in cancer research with the education, knowledge and skills they need to ultimately help more Kiwis with cancer.

Confidence in collaboration

We are respected leaders in funding cancer research. And that’s why other cancer organisations such as Breast Cancer Cure and Melanoma New Zealand choose to partner with us to invest in their early-stage research, a testament to our highly respected investment process, depth of experience and track record.

It goes both ways. When reviewing applications, we also consider how we can partner with other research funders to co-fund or fully-fund projects in their relevant field.

Because, when tackling such a significant issue as cancer, collaboration is crucial. By joining forces, we have a much greater chance of beating cancer and creating a brighter future for us all.

By investing in cancer research in our own backyard, we all benefit

Our funding is focused on backing Aotearoa based researchers and projects. From more clinical trials at our fingertips to a deeper understanding of why our Māori and Pasifika communities are harder hit to the wider economic benefits, we all benefit.

Quite simply, research creates healthier communities, a stronger economy, and brings us one step closer to a future beyond cancer.

This future is only possible with your help!
